Biennial, or short lived perennial.

Habit
Large plants grow to 6ft tall in bloom, which happens in the second or third year. Large seed umbels form after blooming.

Sun/Soil
Full sun to shade. Prefers moist hummusy or clay soils.

Germination/Sowing
Seeds germinate best when direct sown in fall. They can also be direct sown in early spring, or started in flats indoors in spring.

Growing/Care
Little to no care needed. You may wish to cut the flower stalks back after flowering to prevent self-seeding.

Harvesting
The root can be harvested in the fall of the first year, the stalks in the spring of the second, and the seeds in the summer of the second year.

Culinary Uses
Popular flavouring for confectionery and liqueurs.

Medicinal Uses
Used medicinally to aid digestion, and for colds and coughs.
