Medicinal Herb Farm Garden Assistant Position

March–November | Winters off
$22–$25/hour, depending on experience

We’re a small team of three looking for our fourth person to join Ravensong Seeds & Herbals in a long-term, seasonal position on our medicinal herb farm.

The heart of this position is working outside and caring for our extensive medicinal herb gardens throughout the growing season. We’re looking for someone who genuinely loves being outdoors, enjoys hard physical work, has a strong work ethic and would like to become part of Ravensong for years to come.

This isn’t a position where every day looks the same. Over the course of a season, you might propagate hundreds of medicinal plants, prepare and plant garden beds, weed and mulch established gardens, dig roots, harvest herbs for medicine, gather seeds, make fresh plant tinctures, clean and package seeds, wildcraft plants from the surrounding landscape, or work alongside our interns.

What you’ll be doing
The majority of this position is hands-on farm and garden work, including:
• Planting, transplanting and propagating medicinal herbs
• Weeding, mulching and maintaining garden beds
• Preparing soil and planting areas
• Watering and general garden care
• Mowing and other seasonal property maintenance
• Harvesting medicinal flowers, leaves, seeds and roots
• Digging and dividing perennial plants
• Processing freshly harvested herbs
• Seed harvesting, cleaning and packaging
• Making tinctures and other herbal preparations
• Occasional wildcrafting
• Helping with work in the apothecary
• Working alongside and, with experience, helping guide our seasonal interns
• Spring and fall garden work and other seasonal farm tasks

The physical side of the job
This is a physically demanding position, and we want applicants to have a realistic picture of what working here is like.

Most working hours during the growing season are spent outdoors and on your feet. Days regularly involve walking, bending, kneeling, digging, lifting and carrying, pushing loaded wheelbarrows and performing repetitive garden tasks. Root harvests and some other seasonal jobs can be particularly strenuous.

We work outside in sunshine, heat, rain, mud and cool fall weather.

We’re looking for someone who is already physically fit and capable of this kind of work, but just as importantly, someone who genuinely enjoys it. If spending a day outside getting dirty, moving your body and accomplishing something tangible sounds deeply satisfying to you, you’ll probably feel at home here.

Who we’re hoping to find
Because we’re such a small team, finding the right person matters enormously to us. We’re looking not only for someone capable of doing the work, but for someone whose personality and approach to work fit well with the way we work together.

You don’t need to arrive with extensive knowledge of herbal medicine. Much of what we do can be learned here.

We’re looking for someone who is:

• Dependable and committed. When you’re one of four people on a small farm team, everyone counts. We need someone who can reliably commit to working Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday throughout our season and who takes showing up consistently and on time seriously.

• Comfortable working independently. Once you’ve learned a task, you’ll often be trusted to carry it through on your own without continual direction or supervision.

• Hard-working. You enjoy physical work, maintain a good working pace and are willing to pitch in wherever you’re needed.

• Positive and easygoing. Farm days don’t always go according to plan. We value people who can adapt, keep a good attitude and enjoy working alongside others.

• Open-minded and curious. There is an enormous amount to learn here, and we value people who are genuinely curious, interested in learning new skills and receptive to different ways of doing things. As a small team working closely together, we also value openness to different perspectives, ideas and ways of moving through the world, even when they aren’t our own.

• Observant and self-motivated. Over time, we’d love you to become someone who notices what needs doing and takes initiative rather than always waiting for the next instruction.

• Interested in plants and herbal medicine. A genuine interest in gardening, medicinal plants, herbalism, natural medicine or working with the land will make this position particularly rewarding.

Previous farming, gardening, horticulture, landscaping or herbal experience is an asset, but it isn’t essential for the right person.

The Position
This is a three-day-a-week seasonal position, Tuesday through Thursday from approximately 9 am to 4 pm.

Our regular working season runs from March through November, with December, January and February off.

The position begins September 22, 2026, giving our new team member an opportunity to join us for the fall season before returning when the gardens wake up again in March.

Starting wage is $22–$25/hour, depending on experience. We believe that growing experience, responsibility and long-term commitment to the farm should be recognized, and wages increase incrementally as your role at Ravensong develops over time.

Most importantly, we’re looking for someone who wants to stay. Our hope is to find someone who will return each spring, deepen their skills and knowledge from season to season, take on greater responsibility and become an integral part of our little team.

About Ravensong
Ravensong Seeds & Herbals is a small medicinal herb farm and apothecary in Black Creek on Vancouver Island. We grow a diverse collection of medicinal plants, produce our own seeds, make fresh plant herbal medicines and teach people how to grow, harvest and work with medicinal plants.

Our work follows the seasons, and much of what we do still happens by hand. The person who joins us will have the opportunity to learn the entire cycle of working with medicinal plants, from putting a seed into the soil to tending and harvesting the mature plant and eventually transforming it into medicine.

There are currently three of us working together at the heart of Ravensong, along with our seasonal interns. We’re looking for a fourth person to join our core team, someone who wants to learn with us, work hard with us and, hopefully, make Ravensong part of their life for years to come.
