Habit
To 3ft tall with pink, purple, or white flowers. Heart-shaped leaves with serrated margins. Flowers through the late spring/early summer. Flowers are intensely fragrant in evening. Mid-summer blooms begin to be replaced by transparent papery seed capsules that resemble coins.
Sun/Soil
Full sun to part shade. Not fussy about soil.
Germination/Sowing
The seeds germinate easily and can be direct sown in spring or fall, or sown in flats in the spring and then transplanted out once they are big enough.
Growing/Care
Low maintenance, but does best in a partly shady spot if not getting regular watering. Will self-seed and naturalize in the garden.
Harvesting
The seed pods may be harvested once they are completely dry and have become translucent. Rub each ‘coin’ gently to remove the seeds and you will be left with silvery-transparent coins that keep well in dried flower arrangements.
Culinary Uses
The seeds are sometimes eaten as a mustard subsitute.
